Hello;

We are in the process of collecting feedback on our proposed course design at Garin Park in Lyon County. It is a 9-hole course with a mix of woods, open space, elevation changes, and the ever-present SW MN wind.

Before we set our target permanently we would like feedback on the layout. At this time, stakes are marking the proposed target locations, and tee boxes.

The link below is an article on our website that is in development. Photos and additional text to follow.

Thanks for any input you can provide. We want to make this course the best possible in Southwest Minnesota.

Hi Roger!

Are the stakes clearly visible in the ground?  Or is there a lot of taller grasses that might make walking it a bit difficult to do?  What's the tick situation like?  I'd be open to possibly taking a look and "playing" it (throwing discs from stake to stake) next weekend...as I might need to take my daughter to Camp down in Okaboji, and could swing up that way on my way home.  The hole descriptions and the course map look very good!  But it's almost impossible to offer any type of quality feedback to you without seeing the holes in question.

Can't wait to have another course here in the SW to play!  And I love that you're gathering input/feedback BEFORE the concrete is dry.  :-)  Too many people worry about keeping things "secret" until after things open, as they don't want anyone messing with "their" design(s).

Hi Derek;

Stakes are all in mown grass, and are visible - at least when you get close enough. I have not come across any ticks this year on the course. Hope you get a chance to play it. I know its not possible to gain feedback unless one gives it a try first. We're hoping to get feedback so we can set the targets mid-August.

Thanks for the response.

Hey Roger!

I snuck out to Garvin Park this morning to walk that land and see what I could see.  Looks like a beautiful piece of land!  That said, I'd probably go at LEAST 12-14 holes out there.  That, and not have the second hole throw down the gravel road (to the bathrooms and warming house).  If it's not TOO much trouble, I'd cut in two wooded holes in the design (my "holes 2 and 11"), then have 3/4/5/10 effectively follow the horse/hiking trails (only widen them 3-4 times as wide).

Whatever you decide to do though, if everything else on my idea for the course quickly winds up in the recycle bin, the one thing I would strongly, STRONGLY encourage you to do is to incorporate in my "hole 7" (whatever hole it became).  That's your signature hole on the entire course...and for folks who haven't been to Garvin Park, it's basically SW Minnesota's "Giant's Ridge" or "Hyland SSA" shot down a giant sloping hill.  I would guess at LEAST 650 feet...maybe 700+!  Players would drive to Garvin Park for recreational rounds and/or tournaments just for that one shot alone.  Empty their bags (of drivers, at least)...and have a blast doing it.  Holes 1, 4-9, and 12 would be the best holes on the course...and Hole 7 might be a ton of people's favorite hole to play within 30-40 miles in any direction.  It could be that good.  It HAS to be in there...somehow...some way.  :-)

Anyway, that's my $1.50 on the subject.  For what it's worth.  But when I saw "Hole 7," I immediately thought Giant's Ridge/Hyland SSA.

If it helps (Roger), I posted several photos of some of the areas I looked at when I walked around on the course on July 19: https://www.facebook.com/datonn/media_set?set=a.10201444127006513.1...  Again, just my few ideas.  Though please, PLEASE incorporate that hill down the slope (8-9 would be awesome too, IMHO) if you can.  :-)
