Kaposia Open: Details?

Maybe I'm missing it posted someplace else, but are there any more details about the Kaposia Open this weekend?  Start time, perhaps?

Also, is there a place to Pre Reg?

I asked about player packs, and they said it would take away from the payouts. I asked a few of the intermediate players if they were pdga members, and about half were not. So we paid a $40 entry fee. I took 1st in intermediate, and won $55 store credit to FF. Second took $40, more than likely just getting his money back. You do the math, 9 int players @ $30 per person = $270. Payouts were $55, 40, 30 , 20, which totals $145. That means they made $125 on just the intermediate division, and $40 more when you add the 4 people that had to pay the $10 non-pdga member fee. The only thing worth while was the plaque i got.

I'm gonna try to break it down for you numbers wise...the payouts seem legit for the field size/entry fee.

First entry fee was $30. If you paid $10 extra for non-pdga member, that $10 goes DIRECT to the PDGA and is not part of the total purse. The total net purse was $270. Of that $270, $18 goes to the PDGA for sanctioning fees ($2 per player). Another $2 per player goes to the MFA for year end payouts. That leaves the purse at $234.

Now if green fees are included, an extra $5 per person MAY have had to go to Kaposia. By stating that greens are included, it doesn't mean they aren't paid, just that you don't have to pay seperate. At $5 a head, that's another $45 out of the original purse, leaving it at $189. Guesstimate of $30 for trophy+CTPs and you are looking at $159 for the purse.

Assuming the above and using a PDGA pay scale that can be found HERE, using the 50% field payout, the breakdown is as follows:

3 $30
4 $20
5 $15

I'm not sure where the price point is for DG tournaments. Some events seem to always fill, others never. Perhaps it's the course, location, cost, choice of weekend, perception of the TD, etc.

I just want it to be clear that in my earlier post, I added KNOWN costs, and then ASSUMED costs, which to me look legit. From a guideline perspective, PDGA C-Tiers only require 85% of the entry fees to go back to the player Here. That 15% is potential for where the TD could make money from all divisions outside of Ams. Under those guidelines, the tournament was well within the payout requirements.

I hope I was able to highlight all of the extra "taxes" on DG that all come out before payouts. A recap of big ones are:

$2 to PDGA from all players for sanctioned events
$2 to MFA for all MST and MDS events
$10 to PDGA from all non member players for sanctioned events
$?? any course reservation/additional insurance fees.
$?? any players packs
$?? any CTPs
$?? any Trophies
$?? any other items, flags, pencils, scorecards, next tee signs, etc.

I think it was Allen Bye and some other people that were promoting an intermediate tourney with a disc golf clinic a little while back. I think that is the next step in getting people worked into tourneys. I think there should be higher competition tourneys that cost more and then rec tourneys that are cheaper. Maybe just like with the PGA the am/rec only tourneys everyone gets a players pack and only trophies are awarded no plastic for the winners -- making it possible to charge smaller entry fees and still pay course fees, ect.

Thanks jake for helping break it down, it seems more resonable now. But I do know talking with the guy who got second place that he was not happy only getting his money back, and said he was discouraged from playing another tounament for a while.

That's sad to hear that he was discouraged, maybe having a better understanding of where the money goes would have helped. In reality, he (and all other INT players) were playing for ~$25 of thier entry fees due to MFA/PDGA/Ace Pool/CTP taxes that as we all know, are taken out first.
